Homogenization Theory for a Replenishing Passive Scalar Field

چکیده
Homogenization theory provides a rigorous framework for calculating the effective diffusivity of a decaying passive scalar field in a turbulent or complex flow. We extend this framework to the case where the passive scalar fluctuations are continuously replenished by a source (and/or sink). The basic structure of the homogenized equations carries over, but in some cases the homogenized source can involve a non-trivial coupling of the velocity field and the source. We derive expressions for the homogenized source term for various multiscale source structures and interpret them physically.

Homogenization and mixing measures for a replenishing passive scalar field
The efficiency with which an incompressible flow mixes a passive scalar field that is continuously replenished by a steady source-sink distribution has been quantified using the suppression of the mean scalar variance below the value it would attain in the absence of the stirring. We examine the relationship this mixing measure has to the effective diffusivity obtained from homogenization theor...
متن کاملSimulation of Low Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence Including the Passive Scalar
Full simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence containing a homogeneous passive scalar were made at low Reynolds numbers and various Prandtl numbers. The results show that the spectral behavior of the two fields are quite similar; both fields decay as power-law functions of time. However. the decay exponent is quite dependent on both the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The decay exponent of...
متن کاملPassive scalar evolution in peripheral regions.
We consider the evolution of a passive scalar (concentration of pollutants or temperature) in a chaotic (turbulent) flow. A universal asymptotic behavior of the passive scalar decay (homogenization) related to peripheral regions (near walls) is established. The passive scalar moments and their pair correlation function in the peripheral region are analyzed. A special case investigated in our pa...
متن کاملMean-field theory for a passive scalar advected by a turbulent velocity field with a random renewal time.
Mean-field theory for turbulent transport of a passive scalar (e.g., particles and gases) is discussed. Equations for the mean number density of particles advected by a random velocity field, with a finite correlation time, are derived. Mean-field equations for a passive scalar comprise spatial derivatives of high orders due to the nonlocal nature of passive scalar transport in a random velocit...
متن کامل2 00 9 Lagrangian views on turbulent mixing of passive scalars
The Lagrangian view of passive scalar turbulence has recently produced interesting results and interpretations. Innovations in theory, experiments, simulations and data analysis of Lagrangian turbulence are reviewed here in brief. Part of the review is closely related to the so-called Kraichnan model for the advection of the passive scalar in synthetic turbulence. Possible implications for a be...
